Photographer of the Month April: Cross Your Heart Studio
That's enough from us!
Name: Nathan Beard / Cross Your Heart Studio
Location: Jacksonville, Florida, USA however, location changes every 3 years thanks to being in the military.
What inspired you to take up skate park photography?
I have always been drawn toward skate photography and when I found out that quad park skating was a thing I was hooked. I saw the community and what they did for one another and from that point on that I wanted to do everything I could to help them, which just so happened to be photography.

Skater/Skaters: Katie “Brawl” Wagner (@eirinngobrawl)
Brawl doing a Judo Air out of a bowl has been one of my favorite things to watch recently. Not only because its super badass but because just two months ago she had never done one in her life and now, well, you can see where she’s at now. Keep an eye on her because she is going places.
What do you enjoy the most about shooting roller skaters?
I believe my favourite thing is watching skaters obtain their goals. I’m afforded the opportunity to watch people go from doing the bare basics of skating to flying through the air, or skaters dropping down 13ft verts like its child’s play or even people taking common tricks and adding so much of their own style to it that it becomes synonymous with who they are. I love being able to show the skaters how badass they look in photos. I think some people don’t see themselves like that very often so when I’m able to capture an image that they can be proud of and show their family and friends how cool they look, that makes me happy.

Skater/Skaters: Jonny Clark (@_trashpanda_)
If you ever get the great pleasure to meet Jonny then you know if there is a gap or a ledge that is believed to be even the slight bit jumpable, Jonny is going to jump it. Plain and simple. Also, he can cook like no other. I have dreams about his cooking.
What has been your favourite session to date?
My favourite session has to be the summer of shred sessions I did through Virginia last summer in 2018. Plenty of abandoned buildings, pools, backyards, ditches, and DIY spots in the middle of nowhere. If you had to hike to it, explore for it, or and get dirty to be there, then we were there.

Carvefest ’18 was a crazy amount of fun and watching tricks like this makes me believe anything is possible in the skating world.
Favorite trick to capture?
Any type of trick in the air, be it grabs, kicks, flips, anything. It gives people seeing the trick that sense of inherent danger and anything can happen in big air tricks, good or bad, but it makes the end product that much more amazing.

Location: Laurel Skate Park, Glen Allen, Virginia
Skater/Skaters: Laura “Glam” Gambrel (@raspyberry)
Glam is who I would pick to have on my side in a knife fight. She brings a fun flair to her tricks and sometimes even to her bails.
If you could only shoot one skatepark for the rest of your shooting days, which one and why?
It would have to be the Lost Bowl. I have never walked away from there without awesome photos. There is literally something there for everyone, between a bowl, quarter pipes, fire-pit, etc., and the place keeps growing. I don’t believe I could ever get bored or tired of shooting it. Plus, the owner, Pat, and his amazing doggo, Early, are pretty rad, so what more could you ask for?

Location: Mt. Trashmore Skatepark, Virginia Beach, Virginia
Skater/Skaters: Kathleen Macias (@skatewytch)
Trashmore is one of the only places in the Virginia area that has a 13ft vert and Kathleen dropped in on it for the first time that day and made it seem so easy. I couldn’t be more proud or happy for her and where she is going with skating. She is one of the next big names to pay attention to.
The only other thing I would add is that if anyone that skates comes to town and wants to go out and get some photos taken, or explore an abandoned building or area in hopes of finding a secret skate spot, 9 times out of 10 I am down for it. So, don’t hesitate to hit us up and keep an eye out for when we move, it may in fact be closer to a bunch of new CIB Chapters.

Location: The Lost Bowl
Skater/Skaters: Zoe Boehl (@zoerolls)
During Carvefest’17 the pool was filled with balloons for people to skate around which made for a really fun and slippery time. Of course, Zoe flew through them all like a hot knife through butter and I can’t recall watching her trip or fall at any point during that session.
